1. NEW FORMAT FOR MONTHLY NEWSLETTER AS A DIGEST:
== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

For the ideas for this new format I wish to thank the authors of the several newsletters that I subscribe to, especially Jeff March of EditPros News and Joe Edelman - The Useless-Infomaster of The Useless Digest , a Weekly Useless Info Newsletter. The quote I have posted above, “Knowledge is never useless.” came from the most recent Useless Digest newsletter. I wish Joe success in achieving his goal of 100,000 subscribers to his digest. Joe Edelman’s newsletter this month triggered my decision to create this new format, and I borrowed some ideas from Joe. Thanks, Joe!

3. ON A PERSONAL NOTE:

== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

This past month was a busy one, I managed to complete three books, but I had only time to write one review for this newsletter. My wife Del returned home in mid-May, completing her consulting contra ct in New England and we spent a lot of time together. On Mother’s Day my mother died at the age of 82, and we spent that day and week celebrating her life. Then we went up to Whistler, British Columbia, for a well-earned vacation in the snow-capped mountains.

PHOTO CAPTIONS (CURSOR FLYOVER ISSUE RESOLVED):If you have been enjoying the photos in DIGESTWORLD, but have wondered who or what you were looking at, you will now be able to hold your cursor still over the photo and the photo's description will appear. (Test on Butterfly-Crab Image at Right.) We spend a lot of time writing these photo captions and hope you will read them. All the Archived Issues have been updated to provide descriptions when your cursor rests for a second on a photo. Note that older Reviews have not been updated. If you haven't finished reading text when description disappears, move cursor away and back on photo to finish. We thank you for your patience and hope this pleases you.

4. ANNOUNCING THE NEW DOYLETICS.COM WEBSITE
== == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == == ==

With June busting out all over, I have some exciting new material for you to read, not reviews, but essays on a new science, doyletics.
Doyletics — the science of the acquisition and transmission of physical body states (doyles).

Note the similarity with genetics — the science of the acquisition and transmission of physical body traits (genes).

I have just launched a new website devoted to this nascent science and invite the subscribers to this inaugural Good Mountain Press Digest to inspect the website. If you have time to read nothing else, read the
Introduction and the Red Wagon Story. And check back often as new material is being added on a daily basis as the design for the website evolves. Our goal is to post material from the construction Home Page with links and to later focus on the design of the Home Page.

5. REVIEW FOR JUNE
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

SUFI TEACHINGS BY HAZRAT INAYAT KHAN
And for you review readers, here’s the new review for June. “Sufi Teachings: The Art of Being” by Hazrat Inayat Khan. Here’s an excerpt from my review of the book by this marvelous Cambridge educated Sufi: Khan points out that when Christ said, "Blessed are the poor in spirit," He was referring directly to being poor in this "self-created spirit" - that is, the little self or ego. Thus, it would be better understood today if we were to say it this way, "Blessed be the one who is empty of ego." To be empty in this way is to become like a reed flute so that the beautiful music of God can resonate and flow through one's body.
[page 190] Rumi has given a beautiful picture of this. He tells why the melody of the reed flute makes such an appeal to our hearts. It is, he says, because first it is cut away from its original stem, and then holes have been made in its heart so that the heart has been broken, and it begins to cry.

6. About this Inaugural Issue:
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

The material for this section of the website version has been rewritten. The original digest sent out by email contained out-of-date information about my reviews on my non-defunct Earthlink home page website, http://home.earthlink.net/~jeauxy/arjrevs.htm. In the year 2000, it took me several months to move all my reviews to my new Earthlink business website, doyletics.com. So, now in year 2007, I have rewritten this section to avoid confusing new readers. Most of my readers come from Search engines, mostly Google, so there will be many new readers in months and years to come who will enjoy seeing this Inaugural Issue.

Others ways this issue of the Digest is different from the original email I sent out in 2000:

  • Photos from the time period of the original Digest have been added. No photos were included in the email versions of the Digest because of the scarcity of readers with broadband back then and the long time required for transmission of photos.
  • Book covers of the reviewed books will be included as is the practice in current new Digests.
  • The Archived Issues section will be complete and up-to-date and maintained so each month for all Digests. This is true for the Inaugural Issue, but will take several weeks to complete for the remaining Digests.
  • The masthead photo, Matherne's Reviews, will be included atop the Review Section.
  • Final Note: as the Digest evolved from June-2000, new Sections were added and changed. We will attempt to fit these changes into the template while preserving so far as possible the original email Digest form.

My reviews are not intended to replace the purchasing and reading of the reviewed books, but rather to supplant a previous reading or to spur a new reading of your own copy. What I endeavor to do in my reviews is to impart a sufficient amount of information to get the reader comfortable with the book so that they will want to read it for themselves.
